See One of the Biggest Broadway Hits of 2017, Right Here in the Midwest
As one of the first motion picture palaces whose décor was inspired by the Far East, Chicago’s Oriental Theatre opened to much fanfare on May 8, 1926. Designed by George L. and Cornelius W. Rapp for theatre managers Balban and Katz, the theatre, a virtual museum of Asian art, presented popular first-run motion picture, complemented by lavish stage shows.
The many stars that played the theatre are The Three Stooges, Judy Garland, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, and Fanny Brice. Like all beautiful theatres of a past era, eventually, The Oriental fell in disrepair, but in 1996, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that the Oriental would be restored to its original grandeur for the presentation of live stage musicals. In 1999, Fosse debuted at the Oriental Theatre before embarking on a national tour, and the list goes on an on from 2005’s Wicked and 2005’s Billy Elliot to 2013’s Big Fish and 2014’s Motown.
