An Easy Way to Save Some Money on Your Heating Bill

Did you know that lowering your thermostat one degree for just eight hours a day can reduce your heating bill by one percent? This can really add up, especially considering that energy costs continue to rise. Your best strategy is to find a way to turn down your thermostat when you don't need the extra heat, such as when you are gone for the day or at night.

However, it can be hard to remember each time you need to do this, and it is nice to wake up to a warm house in the morning. The solution is a programmable thermostat. Without having to even think about it, you can set your heater to turn down at a set time each night and to crank back up in time for the morning rush at your house. If you are gone every day for work, you can also set it to turn back down when you leave. There are many models of programmable thermostats available. Look for one that is easy and intuitive to use, so you don't have to hunt for the manual each time you want to make a change.

You can save even more money if you only heat the areas of your home that you use. Set your thermostat lower than you would normally, but use space heaters in the rooms you are actually using. This keeps those rooms warm for you, but doesn't heat up parts of your home that don't need it. Care need to be taken if you have small children. A space heater should also be in good working condition and should not be placed near any flammable objects. Set it on a flat, hard surface at least three feet away from anything flammable. Do not block the air intake or the heat output. You should also ensure that the heater you use is certified for indoor use. If it does not have this wording on it, it should not be used indoors or in any unventilated space. Finally, a space heater should have a safety mechanism that shuts it off if it is tipped over.
